ovarian cyst

An ovarian cyst is a sac of fluid that is collected inside or on the surface of an ovary. These cysts are quite common and usually don’t need treatment as they go away on their own after a few months. A more serious manifestation is a situation in which the cysts get twisted or ruptured.

The larger cysts tend to present more identifiable symptoms, in general. These include pain in the pelvis, wherein one may feel a slightly higher degree of pain on one side of the body below the belly button, a feeling of a abdomen heaviness and bloating. These symptoms require the consultation of a doctor, immediately.

Menstrual cycle is the main cause leading to the formation of cysts called functional cysts. There are two types — follicular and corpus luteum cysts. Other types that are not related to the menstrual cycle but are cysts include Dermoid cyst , Cystadenoma and Endometrioma.

They are diagnosed using the ultrasound technique and laboratory tests. The bigger ones can be treated in a multitude of ways including medication and surgery, wherein options for the latter include laparoscopic and laparotomic procedures depending on the condition of the patient. There are also natural methods to shrink the cysts. All in all, one would feel pain in the lower body near the pelvis and abdomen only when one has a larger ovarian cyst, while the smaller cysts do not present themselves with pain being a symptom.
